WHAT IT IS
A nine-foot bronze Christ standing on the sea floor in 25 feet of water, arms raised, encrusted in coral.
The statue is a cast of Guido Galletti's Christ of the Abysses in the Mediterranean, donated to the Underwater Society of America in 1961 and sunk in what is now John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Coral has claimed the hands and shoulders. Snorkellers can reach it on a calm day. Divers hold weddings there, which requires a specific kind of confidence.
