WHAT IT IS

A prehistoric spring inside a dry cave, entered by a staircase down a hole in a field.

The roof of the cavern collapsed and left a chimney into a 72-degree spring, which is why cold mornings send a column of vapour up out of the ground, hence the name. Extinct animal fossils have come out of the bottom. You climb down a wooden staircase into a cathedral of limestone and swim in water that has been the same temperature since the Pleistocene. Reservations are mandatory and it is worth planning around.
