WHAT IT IS
Nineteen acres of above-ground vaults, a monument to the USS Maine dead, and a headstone reading 'I told you I was sick'.
The water table is high, so Key West buries above ground, and the results read like a small stone city. Among the graves: the sailors from the Maine, a Cuban revolutionary, a Yorkshire terrier, and B.P. Roberts, whose epitaph is the best-known joke in the Keys. Chickens roam it. Volunteers give tours on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and know exactly which stories are true.
