WHAT IT IS
A winter neighbourhood of Amish and Mennonite visitors in the middle of Sarasota, moving by adult tricycle and shuffleboard.
Northern Amish and Mennonite families began wintering on this small grid of streets in the 1920s, and it became a permanent seasonal community: no farms, no buggies, but plain dress, front-porch visiting, and a bus service that runs directly from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Transport is by three-wheeled bicycle. There is a produce market, a shuffleboard court, and a strict local etiquette about photographs. Be respectful; these are people's holidays.
