WHAT IT IS

A town where the Christmas tree stays up all year and the post office postmarks thousands of cards each December.

An army fort was established here on 25 December 1837, and the name stuck to the settlement that followed. The post office handles a seasonal flood of mail sent in from around the world purely for the postmark, and volunteers help sort it. The town tree on SR-50 is decorated year-round. Street names include Rudolph, Balsam, and Holly. It is a small community that has fully accepted its situation.
