WHAT IT IS

A real 1565 archaeological site wrapped around a spring that a 19th-century promoter decided was Ponce de León's fountain.

Luella Day McConnell bought the land in 1904, produced a document she said proved the spring's identity, and started selling water. The strange part is that the site turned out to be genuinely important: excavations found the first Spanish settlement and a Timucua village. So you get real archaeology, a planetarium, peacocks, costumed cannon crews, and a cup of sulphur water that tastes like a struck match.
