WHAT IT IS
A granite monument erected in 1982 to thank the possum for feeding people through hard times.
Wausau declared itself the Possum Capital of the World, and the state legislature agreed by resolution. The monument outside the town hall credits the animal for its economic and nutritional contribution during periods of depression. The annual festival includes a possum auction, and for years the tradition was that no Florida politician could expect Washington County votes without attending. The inscription is entirely sincere.
