WHAT IT IS

A three-storey castle clad in 90,000 discarded aluminium printing plates, with a Spanish galleon restaurant in the moat.

Howard Solomon bought 90 acres of Hardee County cattle land in 1972 and started building. The walls are newspaper printing plates, the stained glass is liquor bottles, and every room is stuffed with sculptures made from scrap and captioned with puns he wrote himself. Out back is a full-size replica galleon that functions as a restaurant. He died in 2016; his family still runs the tours, and still tells the jokes.
