Florida ruins quickly and thoroughly. Heat, damp, hurricanes and termites take buildings apart on a timescale that surprises people from drier places, which is why so much of what is on this list is only a few decades old.
Ten entries. Some were abandoned by decision: a barge canal cut halfway across the state and then cancelled, a missile base stood down in 1979 and left in the sawgrass. Some were abandoned by weather, which in this state is the same as being abandoned by the ground itself. Some were never finished at all, including the largest brick structure in the Americas, made obsolete by artillery before its walls were up.
Read the access notes carefully. Several of these are on private land, under water, or reachable only by boat, and two of them are inside national parks with rules that are enforced.
